About Bluetooth connectivity

With Bluetooth connectivity, you can make a wireless connection to other compatible devices, such as mobile devices, computers, headsets, and car kits.

You can use the connection to send items from your device, transfer files from your compatible PC, and print files with a compatible printer.

Select Menu > Settings and Connectivity > Bluetooth .

Since devices with Bluetooth wireless technology communicate using radio waves, they do not need to be in direct line-of-sight. However, they must be within 10 metres (33 feet) of each other, although the connection may be subject to interference from obstructions such as walls or from other electronic devices.

This device is compliant with Bluetooth Specification 2.0 + EDR supporting the following profiles: Advanced Audio Distribution, Audio/Video Remote Control, Basic Imaging, Basic Printing, Device ID, Dial-up Networking, File Transfer, Generic Audio/Video Distribution, Generic Access, Generic Object Exchange, Handsfree, (Human Interface Device) Headset, Object Push, Phone Book Access, Serial Port, and SIM Access . To ensure interoperability between other devices supporting Bluetooth technology, use Nokia approved accessories for this model. Check with the manufacturers of other devices to determine their compatibility with this device.

When the device is locked, only connections to authorised devices are possible.

Bluetooth settings

Select Menu > Settings and Connectivity > Bluetooth .

Select from the following:

Bluetooth — Activate Bluetooth connectivity.
My phone's visibility — To allow your device to be visible to other Bluetooth devices, select Shown to all. To set a length of time, after which the visibility is set from shown to hidden, select Set visibility period. To hide your device from other devices, select Hidden.
My phone's name — Edit the name of your device. The name is shown to other Bluetooth devices.
Remote SIM mode — Allow another device, such as a compatible car kit accessory, to use the SIM card in your device to connect to the network.

Security tips

Select Menu > Settings and Connectivity > Bluetooth .

When you are not using Bluetooth connectivity, to control who can find your device and connect to it, select Bluetooth > Off or My phone's visibility > Hidden . Deactivating the Bluetooth function does not affect other functions in your device.

Do not pair with or accept connection requests from an unknown device. This helps to protect your device from harmful content. Operating the device in hidden mode is a safer way to avoid malicious software.

Send data using Bluetooth connectivity

You can have several Bluetooth connections active at a time. For example, if you are connected to a compatible headset, you can also transfer files to another compatible device.

Open the application where the item you want to send is stored.

Go to an item, and select Options > Send > Via Bluetooth .

Devices with Bluetooth wireless technology that are within range are displayed. Device icons are as follows:

To interrupt the search, select Cancel.

Select the device with which you want to connect.
If the other device requires pairing before data can be transmitted, a tone sounds, and you are asked to enter a passcode. The same passcode must be entered in both devices.
When the connection is established, Sending data is displayed.

Tip:

When searching for devices, some devices may show only the unique address (device address). To find the unique address of your device, in the dialler, enter *#2820#.

Pair devices

You can pair your device with a compatible device to make subsequent Bluetooth connections between the devices quicker. Before pairing, create your own passcode (1 to 16 digits), and agree with the owner of the other device to use the same code. Devices that do not have a user interface have a factory-set passcode. The passcode is used only once.

Select Menu > Settings and Connectivity > Bluetooth .

Open the Paired devices tab.
Select Options > New paired device . Devices that are within range are displayed.
Select the device.
Enter the passcode on both devices.

indicates a paired device in the device search view.

Connect to an accessory after pairing

Select the audio device, and from the pop-up menu, select Connect to audio device. Some audio accessories connect automatically to your device after pairing.

Set a device as authorised

Select Set as authorised. Connections between your device and the authorised device can be made without your knowledge. Use this only for your own devices, such as your compatible headset or PC, or devices that belong to someone you trust. indicates authorised devices in the paired devices view.

Cancel a pairing with a device

Select the device, and from the pop-up menu, select Delete.

Cancel all pairings

Select Options > Delete all .

Receive data using Bluetooth connectivity

When you receive data using Bluetooth connectivity, a tone sounds, and the device asks you if you want to accept the message. If you accept, is displayed, and you can find an informative message about the data in the Inbox folder in Messaging. Messages received using Bluetooth connectivity are indicated with .

Apple's (AAPL - News) redesigned iPhone is destined to be a knockout success. The phone scores high on style points with its sleek glass and stainless steel design, and it wins points for its multitasking software and improved screen.

The Apple iPhone 4 is set to go on sale Thursday. Judging by the record demand during the pre-sale period, the newest iPhone will make a huge sales splash, especially with old iPhone owners trading up.

All the presales excitement and Apple-driven hype have set expectations very high. But mighty Apple plays to a tough crowd. It's an affluent group that has been eager to buy the next new thing out of Cupertino, Calif. It's also a highly discerning group with a refined taste in gadgets, and that makes them a bit fussy.

Here are five bruises on the new Apple iPhone that may engender complaint.

As smartphone challengers like HTC, Motorola (MOT - News) and Nokia (NOK - News) embrace the megapixel race with 8-megapixel and 12-megapixel cameras, Apple's new iPhone keeps it cheap with a 5-megapixel model.

This will be a bigger point of contention this week when Verizon (VZ - News) and Motorola unveil the Droid X Wednesday, the newest Google (GOOG - News) Android phone, which features an 8-megapixel camera. Android phone giant HTC has also been generous with 8-megapixel cameras in its Droid Incredible and Sprint's (S - News) EVO.

Meanwhile, Apple, always the laggard in cameras, won't enter the 8-megapixel class until next year when it debuts a sweet Sony (SNE - News) camera in its 2011 iPhone. But by then, who knows where the rest of the pack will be?

No. 4: No Swype

If you've seen Swype or used it, you know why this omission makes the list. Typing on a touchscreen is a challenge as the flat glass surface offers few clues to where your fat fingers are precisely making contact. It's an error-prone process that gives one a longing for the raised keys of the BlackBerry keyboard from Research In Motion (RIMM - News).

But the Swype keypad software helps tame the new medium. Swype follows the pattern of your finger movements to type words or predict words without the usual hunting and pecking.

Apple did wonders with the touchscreen, but Swype makes it more useful for those among us who like to type.

No. 3: Video Calling

Okay, it's not totally bait and switch, but Apple's hot new iPhone video calling feature, FaceTime, comes with lots of asterisks and a limited applicability.

Say you want to video chat with someone using the Apple iPhone 4. That someone has to have a WiFi connection and he has to use the same application on his own iPhone 4. You're looking at a small club of people -- not exactly an application of global Skype-like proportions.

No. 2: iPhone 4 Shortages

Strong demand is only half the story for Apple's iPhone sales debut. Limited supply is the other. A shortage of in-plane display panels, the crucial part of Apple's touted retina display screens, has forced Apple's contract manufacturers to cut production rates in half to 1 million iPhones a month.

This means there won't be enough iPhones on hand to meet the presumably high demand. Though it's not a terrible problem to have if you are a gadget maker, sellouts and delivery delays will mar Apple's big iPhone 4 debut. The frustration could push buyers toward other phones.

No. 1: No Verizon iPhone.

A new iPhone is big. But a new iPhone at Verizon? Much bigger.

Apple's exclusive partnership with AT&T (T - News) has been a point of discord among iPhone owners and it has tarnished the public perception of both companies. It also has done almost nothing for AT&T's stock.

Investors have been waiting for the Verizon iPhone. But that's apparently not going to happen until next year, if ever.

So Apple fans who want the new iPhone have to lock in for another two years with AT&T. This scenario is not particularly pleasant considering that AT&T's new subscriber plans put penalties on people (like iPhone users) who happen to be heavy data users.

This happened to mine. whatever you do immediately take your phone battery out. the reason why our phones stop working after its in the water is because you try to turn it on again without letting it dry and the battery shorts the phone. now u have to be patient this is the ONLY WAY. u have to put ur phone in a bag of rice..i know this sounds crazy but the rice sucks up all the moisture..leave it there for 2-3 days...WITHOUT turning the phone off..that is crucial. and then try to leave it on something warm like a tv...i did this and i turned my blackberry on and it works PERFECT. i swear it was even sitting in water for over 30 secs. GOOD LUCK..

and whatever you do..DO NOT CHECK TO SEE IF IT WORKS...wait at least 2.5 full days. good luck.

The idea of adding text messaging to the services of mobile users was latent in many communities of mobile communication services at the beginning of the 1980s. The first action plan of the CEPT Group GSM approved in December 1982 requested "The services and facilities offered in the public switched telephone networks and public data networks ...should be available in the mobile system".This target includes the exchange of text messages either directly between mobile stations or the transmission via Message Handling Systems widely in use since the beginning of the 1980s.

The innovation in SMS is indicated by the word Short in Short Message Service. The GSM system is optimized for telephony, since this was identified as its main application. The key idea for SMS was to use this telephony-optimized system and to transport messages on the signaling paths needed to control the telephony traffic during time periods when no signaling traffic existed. In this way unused resources in the system could be used to transport messages without additional cost. However, it was necessary to limit the length of the messages to 128 bytes (later improved to 140 bytes, or 160 7-bit characters), so that the messages could fit into the existing signaling formats. Therefore the service was named “Short Message Service”.

This concept allowed implementing the SMS in every mobile station just by an additional software routine without incremental cost per unit. Also the implementation in the networks required just software without incremental cost. The only new network element was a specialised Short Message Service Centre for a whole countrywide network. It needed capacity expansions of course with growing SMS traffic. This concept was instrumental for the implementation of SMS in every mobile station ever produced and in every network from early days on. Hence a large base of SMS capable terminals and networks existed when the users began to utilise the SMS.

Early development

No individual expert or company can claim to be the ‘father’ or ‘creator’ of the SMS. The GSM project as a whole was indeed a multi-national collaboration at its best. Therefore the responsibility for the SMS innovation is not with a single person but with a network of closely cooperating persons who have created this innovation. They did this with the supporting framework of Standard Bodies and through these organisations made the technology freely available to the whole world. This is described and supported by evidence in the following sections.

The first proposal for SMS which initiated the development of SMS in the group GSM was made by a contribution of Germany and France into the GSM meeting in February 1985 in Oslo. This proposal was further elaborated in GSM subgroup WP1 Services (Chairman Martine Alvernhe, France Telecom) based on a contribution from Germany. There were also initial discussions in the subgroup WP3 network aspects chaired by Jan Audestad (Telenor). The result was approved by the main group GSM in a document of June 85 which was distributed to industry.The input documents on SMS had been prepared by Friedhelm Hillebrand (Deutsche Telekom) with contributions from Bernard Ghillebaert (France Télécom).
